Descended from colonial-era Spanish largely isolated from later immigration waves after 1848, Traditional New Mexican Spanish preserves archaisms lost almost everywhere else: forms like 'naiden' for nadie and 'ansina' for así, an aspirated jota, and a conservative, fully retained coda /s/. Linguists treat it as a genuine relic dialect -- arguably the most historically significant Spanish variety spoken on US soil.
