West Midlands (Birmingham / Black Country)
United Kingdom · Birmingham and the Black Country
A northern vowel system with a distinctly non-northern set of diphthongs. Like Lancashire it has neither the FOOT-STRUT nor the TRAP-BATH split. Unlike Lancashire, PRICE backs and rounds toward [ɑɪ], GOAT starts open at [ʌʊ], and NG-coalescence never happened -- so 'singer' really does rhyme with 'finger', which is the single most reliable tell of the region. H-dropping is general. Non-rhotic.
