The reference Peninsular variety: distinción keeps c/z as [θ] distinct from a fully retained apical /s/, and jota is a hard uvular [χ]. This is the mainstream 'Castilian standard' description found across the literature, though plenty of madrileños show casual /d/ and /s/ weakening in fast speech.
