Curaçao (Papiamentu)

Curaçao · Willemstad / Curaçao

Papiamentu is an Iberian-lexified creole -- Spanish and Portuguese word-stock filtered through Dutch colonial administration and West African (Kikongo/Kimbundu) substrate grammar -- documented (Kouwenberg & Murray 1994) as having genuine lexical and phrasal tone, a pitch contrast neither Iberian source language has. Curaçao (with Bonaire) uses the Dutch-influenced '-u' spelling convention, Papiamentu, distinct from Aruba's more Hispanicizing 'Papiamento'. Known gap: there is no tone-bearing-unit representation anywhere in the current schema, so this preset cannot express lexical tone at all -- not in the scoring matrix and not in the synthesized audio (espeak's flat pitch can't approximate it either). Read tone as a real, cited fact about the language, not something this tool can currently teach you to hear or produce.
