The moving mouth

Every other page here shows you a sound. This one shows you the travel between sounds, which is where a learner actually fails. Type a sentence and your chosen accent says it three ways at once — the mouth cut in half, the face you could check in a mirror, and the tongue body plotted on the vowel chart — all off one set of numbers per instant, so they cannot disagree with each other.

The movement is not a tween between neighbours: every sound pulls on every articulator at once, with a strength that fades with distance in time, and each articulator fades at its own rate. Two things fall out of that, and both are the lesson — transitions, and undershoot.
